First microcertificate graduates
It was an honour to congratulate our first microcertificate graduates.
They completed two courses: Introduction to Health Economics and Entrepreneurship and Innovation in Healthcare.
The HEPII team began intensive work on the European version of the Future Elderly Model (FEM) last year. Microsimulation is a unique method for analysing societal trends at the level of individuals or households — i.e., at the "micro" level. This approach enables the simulation of future population trends, the prevalence of various diseases, and the impact of targeted health policies.
With the advancement of computer technology and the increasing availability of individual-level data, microsimulation is becoming a state-of-the-art method in the social sciences. This approach is particularly relevant in the context of modern challenges such as population ageing, where it is essential to anticipate healthcare needs and plan resources effectively. The model can help, for example, estimate the impact of lifestyle-related diseases, evaluate the effectiveness of prevention programmes, or optimise health expenditures.
HEPII aims to become a centre of expertise in the use of the model for research and health policy design. Under the leadership of Jakub Hlávka and Michal Kvasnicka, we are collaborating on model development with some of the world’s leading experts in microsimulation: Andrea Piano Mortari from the University of Tor Vergata in Rome, Roland Sturm from the prestigious US research organisation RAND Corporation, and Bryan Tysinger from the USC Schaeffer Center for Health Policy & Economics. All three experts will visit Masaryk University in the spring of 2025 to provide consultations on the methodology and implementation of the model.
During their visit, several events will be open to interested members of the public. We cordially invite you to a seminar with Andrea Piano Mortari, which will take place on Thursday, 24 April at 11 a.m. in the large meeting room at the Faculty of Economics and Administration, Masaryk University. There will also be a unique opportunity to attend a lecture by Roland Sturm, held on Tuesday, 29 April at 4:30 p.m. in the Mendel Refectory at the Augustinian Abbey in Brno, as part of the MUNI Seminar Series. We look forward to your participation and to engaging in discussion about the future of health economics.
