Microsimulation as a Tool for Health Policy

The HEPII team began intensive work on the European version of the Future Elderly Model (FEM) last year. Microsimulation is a unique method for analysing societal trends at the level of individuals or households — i.e., at the "micro" level. This approach enables the simulation of future population trends, the prevalence of various diseases, and the impact of targeted health policies. HEPII aims to become a centre of expertise in using the model for health policy research and development.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in the Czech Republic and leading academic institutions, including the Faculty of Economics and Administration at Masaryk University, signed a cooperation agreement on March 11, 2025. The goal is to address urgent challenges in Czech public healthcare and strengthen collaboration in modernizing the healthcare system and education.

Healthcare Needs Experts Who Understand Both Clinical Practice and Data—We’re Here to Change That

Overburdened doctors and nurses, a system that demands increasing funding while lacking efficiency, a lag in digitalization, and the looming reality of an aging population that will only exacerbate these challenges—these are the pressing issues facing healthcare today. A team of experts, including Jakub Hlávka, head of the Health Economics, Policy, and Innovation Institute (HEPII) at Masaryk University, is working to address these concerns. The key? Training professionals who can bridge the gaps between healthcare, economics, data analysis, law, and communication. This is precisely the goal of the new Applied Health Economics Master’s Program, set to launch in the fall of 2025.

AGEING-CZ explores risks associated with ageing population

The project Ageing of the Population and Related Challenges for Health and Social Systems (AGEING-CZ), led by principal investigator Jakub Hlávka from the Faculty of Economics and Administration at Masaryk University, aims to identify the economic, fiscal, and social risks associated with population ageing. In 2023, the Czech Republic ranked 21st globally in terms of the highest proportion of people over 64 and 29th in terms of the lowest proportion of children under 15.
