Research

The Health Economics, Policy and Innovation Institute (HEPII) at Masaryk University in Brno, Czech Republic, conducts policy-relevant research on health economics, health policy and innovation. Our research addresses the allocation of scarce resources, the design and evaluation of health and social care policies, the economic consequences of ageing and chronic disease, and the adoption of new technologies in healthcare. We work with national and international administrative and survey data, including Czech health claims data, the SHARE survey and others, and are involved in the evaluation of randomized control trials in different clinical areas.

We combine academic research with applied analysis for decision-makers. Our projects range from economic evaluation and health technology assessment to microsimulation, administrative data analysis, policy evaluation, prevention, dementia care and long-term care. Our researchers advise policy makers in the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Austria, Ireland, the United States and other countries.

Founded in 2023 at ECON MUNI, HEPII is led by Director Jakub Hlávka and Deputy Director Dagmar Špalková.

Ageing, Dementia and Long-Term Care

We study how population ageing, dementia and declining functional health affect individuals, families, care systems and public finances. Our research supports better prevention, diagnosis and care across health, social and long-term care settings.

Health Technology Assessment and Economic Evaluation

We evaluate whether medicines, devices, diagnostics and models of care provide sufficient value for patients and health systems. Our research informs reimbursement, pricing and resource-allocation decisions under uncertainty and budget constraints.

We develop microsimulation models that show how demographic change, disease and public policies may affect future health, care needs and public spending. By combining administrative and survey data, we help decision-makers compare policy options before they are implemented.

We use economic theory and quantitative methods to examine how patients, households, providers and institutions respond to incentives and policy changes. Our research provides evidence on healthcare use, prevention, inequalities, employment and the effects of health and social policies.

We study how biomedical and digital technologies move from development into routine healthcare. Our research examines their value, adoption, reimbursement and governance, including digital health, artificial intelligence, personalised therapies and new models of care.
