On Tuesday, June 4, 2024, HEPII Roundtable #1 was held on the topic „The Potential of Gene Therapy in the Central European Region“. Jaroslav Groero and Jakub Hlávka presented the results of their research on the potential of gene therapy in Central Europe, focusing on the Visegrad Group and Austria, a region with 63 million inhabitants. They highlighted gene therapies that are not yet widely available in the region but are already approved in other countries.

According to the results of the paper, which is currently undergoing peer review, preliminary estimates indicate that a large proportion of patients eligible for this innovative treatment will include those with retinopathy (retinal dystrophy). The greatest clinical and societal benefits are expected from therapies for β-thalassemia. The discussion, attended by representatives from CREATIC, IHIS, and other organizations, touched upon issues of reimbursement and the evaluation of medical technologies for innovative treatments in the Czech Republic.
