Since our founding in late-2023, when we started with a few empty tables, we have made significant strides to advance health economics in the Czech Republic and the broader Central European region. This includes applying for and receiving multiple research grants, completing the accreditation process for a new Master’s Degree in Applied Health Economics at six participating schools of Masaryk University, and playing an increasingly indispensable role in public policy.
Research grants and collaborations
Researchers based at HEPII or our collaborators have submitted 17 research proposals since 2023, of which many have been funded and others allowed us to establish collaborations with partners across Europe and North America. In January 2024, we started our first Horizon Europe project, focusing on an economic evaluation of a palliative care intervention in nursing homes across Europe.
In April 2024, we started a research collaboration with NUDZ, Charles University and Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam on a project studying the value of early diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease funded by the Czech Healthcare Research Agency.
In July 2024, we started our international collaboration with the University of Rome Tor Vergata on a project funded by the National Institutes of Health to adapt the European Future Elderly Model using Czech data, on which we are building in a large project funded by the Technology Agency of the Czech Republic, which aims to contribute to evidence-based decision-making in health and social care sectors.
In December 2024, we received a significant research grant from the Czech Ministry of Education and Sport where we serve as the coordinating institution. Through this grant, we will study the impact and implications of ageing on the Czech health and social care sectors.
Through this success, we have been able to hire new researchers and data analysts and have several more positions open – primarily at the postdoctoral level. We are open to new applications from highly qualified candidates who are interested in data analysis, economics and health policy.
New Master’s Programme
In early-2024, our new master’s programme in Applied Health Economics received accreditation, and preparations have since been underway for the first cohort which will join us in 2025. Applications have just opened on December 15, 2024, and we look forward to offering world-class education in Brno. Six participating schools of Masaryk University will offer insights into economics, data analysis, epidemiology, public health, biotechnology, pharmaceuticals, health law and social sciences relevant to future analysts, managers and leaders in healthcare. The programme will also offer several partial scholarships to its top students, thanks to the cooperation with several partners.
Public Policy
HEPII researchers have been very active, attending more than 30 conferences and other events. We have actively contributed to the public conversation about future needs of healthcare in the Czech Republic, and published two policy papers to inform decision-making in this important field. Our director Jakub Hlávka became an advisor to the President of the Czech Republic on healthcare and regularly met with top healthcare leaders at the national and regional level.
