Ronald Sturm: Data offers a lot of information, but access is difficult

Professor Roland Sturm from the RAND School of Public Policy (Los Angeles, USA) gave a lecture on April 29 as part of the MUNI Seminar Series titled Advances in Healthcare Modeling: Microsimulation as a Tool for Applied Research. Home care as the future of the health system

"The Czech population is ageing rapidly, and the healthcare system will soon face an increasing burden. A new research project by the HEPII team focuses on the economic evaluation of an innovative home care model that combines case management with telemonitoring. The goal is to determine whether this approach is more effective than current practices. The project will be piloted in five regions and involve a broad range of stakeholders, from hospitals and general practitioners to patients and their caregivers." These changes help tighten the language and enhance readability.

Microsimulation as a Tool for Health Policy

The HEPII team began intensive work on the European version of the Future Elderly Model (FEM) last year. Microsimulation is a unique method for analysing societal trends at the level of individuals or households — i.e., at the "micro" level. This approach enables the simulation of future population trends, the prevalence of various diseases, and the impact of targeted health policies. HEPII aims to become a centre of expertise in using the model for health policy research and development.

The World Health Organization (WHO) in the Czech Republic and leading academic institutions, including the Faculty of Economics and Administration at Masaryk University, signed a cooperation agreement on March 11, 2025. The goal is to address urgent challenges in Czech public healthcare and strengthen collaboration in modernizing the healthcare system and education.
